PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
By Nancy Wang

Dear RECA Members and Friends

Gung Shi Fat Tsai! Happy New Year of the Tiger, 4708. Another year has flown by and what a year it has been! RECA was busier with more performances and activities than any other year. Thank you to all who helped.

The upcoming year is starting in the same manner. RECA is already booked for more than a dozen performances for January and February. In addition to our fabulous Chinese New Year Celebration and Fund Raiser on February 27, we will also be performing for local businesses and many schools.

Come to our New Year Celebration and Fund Raiser and see our dancers, martial artists and Adult Chorus perform the new numbers they are working on. We have about 50 members from 3 years old to past 70 working on entertainment for you. Plus, we have special entertainment with the Taimaleitane Polynesian Dancers. They are the wonderful group that entertained us at our picnic. We enjoyed them so much we invited them back. This is a family event, so be sure to bring all the kids, along with Grandma and Grandpa.

We want to congratulate Phi Phi Dang on being our RECA 2009 Member of the Year. Her plaque will be presented during our Chinese New Year program. Phi Phi has been an RECA member for many years and is responsible for designing and sewing many of our Adult Chorus and dance costumes. She coordinates the Adult Chorus, makes beautiful food for pot lucks, teaches Asian cooking, is one of our main sources for information on traditional religious practices, and many more wonderful attributes that are too numerous to list. . Her grandsons are active in our Youth Group. Come to our Chinese New Year Celebration and help us honor our wonderful 2009 Member of the Year.

If you would like tickets to our Chinese New Year Celebration, please visit Asia Mart, G&G Super Market in Santa Rosa, or call me, Nancy Wang, 707-576-0533, or your nearest board member.
No tickets will be sold at the door. Also, call Judy Cheung, 707-528-0912, or me if you would like to volunteer. We have many enjoyable jobs available.

RECA CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATION

WHEN: Saturday, February 27, 2010,
WHERE: Veterans Memorial Building, Santa Rosa.

RECA LANGUAGE SCHOOL REPORT
By Judy Hardin Cheung

Our language classes continue to have minimum enrollment. We are proud that there are now many alternatives in the community for Mandarin lessons, but we do need to maintain our own enrollment. If you are interested in learning, and having more access to the many activities of RECA, please come and join us. We have a combined level Mandarin class which includes one Chinese speaking adult learning English. They meet each Saturday from 9:00 to 11:30. Our Pre-School group, which meets from 10:30-11:30 each Saturday, is doing very well. Although they have enough tots with parents, there is still room for more participants.

Many of our cultural dancers no longer take language classes, so they are meeting weekly to work on their performances for our Chinese New Year Celebration from 10:30-1:00, or whenever they finish.

Our new music class with Dr. Robert Yee, 10:30-11:30 each Saturday, is doing exceptionally well. They had their premier performance as our background music for the RECA Christmas Party. They are now staying for a second class on drumming and lion dancing taught by Henry Tang. Lunch is being cooked by Nancy Wang for those who stay so many hours.

Henry Tang, RECA's Master Drummer and Lion Dance Instructor, teaches lion drumming and lion dancing each Saturday from 1:00-2:00. Come and join us. Bring ear plugs if you have sensitive hearing.

RECA YOUTH GROUP
By Azy Yeung Heydon

Many of our friends and RECA members have mentioned how lucky our youth group kids are, that they get to do lots of memorable activities such as getting together to eat, practice lion and cultural dances, and just generally running around playing hide and seek or blind-man bluff. They seem to enjoy each other, laugh, joke, play basketball and video games, as well as sing and dance. I'll confess, they make me happy just watching them. They're kids, after all, doing what they do best—being kids.

Many of our youths' families are very busy. Some of the families have never been able to get out for full family adventures. My husband and I often take teens boating, kayaking, bowling, skiing, to Six-Flags, on picnics, to the SF symphony, museums, to watch a classic movie or just hang out together at our house or the RECA Center. And, yes, we have definitely helped put Round Table Pizza in the black.

Nancy and Joe, Judy Cheung and Judy Elliot, Dr Yee, Henry Tang, and many others have also been wonderful in offering their support, supplying the group with healthy doses of love and compassion, as well as teaching our youth our Chinese culture and values. As you can guess, all this practicing and doing requires lots of volunteer driving, and we thank our volunteers for helping with that. Nancy and I always make sure they are well feed.

By the way, they are also learning how to cook basic Chinese food such as spring rolls and pot stickers. Many of our college and working older youth return for holidays and hang out with the younger group kids, and share what they have learned about that greater world beyond the Center in college and life. Once RECA, always RECA, I guess. These kids grow up together, play together, and do community service together. I am sure they will be friends for life. We, of course, want them to be productive and good citizens in this country.

We were lucky enough to have the district attorney Mr. Stephen Passalacqua and Sonoma County School Superintendent Dr. Carl Wong came to talk to our youth some time ago. Our youth got the valuable advice not to join gangs, not to take drug and be sure to study hard in school.

We feel proud and thrilled to be able to share our traditional Chinese cultural performing arts. We are indeed very lucky to live in a beautiful community where every part of our community welcomes us, especially when we are marching in the Rose Parade or performing in schools or other nonprofit organizations. Even our city council members have invited our youths to perform the lion dance in the city council chambers.

Our youth are indeed lucky to have an organization like RECA that cares for them and helps them grow. They are going to have a "positive childhood memory.".

CHINESE IN MENDOCINO COUNTY

Mendocino County is known as a scenic destination. Less well known are the diverse cultural groups who were responsible for building the county of Mendocino. Lorrarine Hee-Chorley’s family lived the history of the Chinese in the area, including anti-Chinese sentiment. Her great-grandfather, Lee Sing John, was the founder of the Taoist Kwan Tai Temple in the village of Mendocino in 1854. She researched and wrote Images of America Chinese in Mendocino County, fulfilling a promise to her father to keep the history of the over 100-year-old temple alive. The book is a fascinating, easy read with local archives and vintage photos, including contributions from the Grace Hudson Museum and The Press Democrat photographer Jeff Kan Lee. Lorraine presented a slide show last year at various Sonoma County library locations. She is a wealth of information! Her book benefits the continued education and restoration of the temple which is open to visitors on a limited schedule. She can be reached at 1heechorley@sbcglobal.net

FREE CITIZENSHIP CLASS

The class is designed for people who have applied or are planning to apply to become U.S. citizens. Class content will include lessons on U.S. history & civics, practice for the interview with the United States Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS), and helping students improve their English. To reserve a class space, call Catholic Charities Immigration Services at (707) 578-6000, or Mary Lowe at (707) 528-8712 ext. 132.

ADULT CHORUS PERFORMANCE FOR INN AT PAULIN CREEK, SANTA ROSA

Every year, for Christmas, Chinese New Year and whenever requested, various groups of RECA performers and presenters give programs in our community. For their Christmas Program, the Inn at Paulin Creek in Santa Rosa, near Coddingtown, invited the Chorus for a full concert performance. They sang lots of Christmas carols and a few traditional Chinese songs.

Dr. Robert Yee started the evening with piano carols.

Our RECA Adult Chorus sang without their conductor who was unable to attend. They performed to a full house of sing-along audience. Everyone had fun!
